Service charges: why calls may cost more than our charges
We can only tell you what we will charge for a phone call (the 'access charge'). Organisations may also charge you a 'service charge'.
We have not control over service charges. Always check if there is a service charge before you call.
To complain about peremium rate numbers or get a refund, you should first complain to the company that runs the service. If your complaint isn't resolved, you can complain to the Phone-paid Services Authority.
Avoid high call charges
You can:
- block premium rate numbers - your phone won’t let you call premium rate numbers
- change your call plan - get more calls for included in your allowance
Exceptions to free calls
Calls to 0870 and 0845 will start being charged if you make a total of 1,000 minutes of calls or 150 calls in a rolling 30-day period. This is our ‘fair usage’ policy.
Free calls don’t include calls to ‘direct-access’ numbers. These are numbers which direct you to another number after you call and 0845 or 0870 number.
