My TV box gets hot

Big things are coming at EE

BT and EE are part of the same family, and big things are coming for the EE brand. But this won't change any of the BT services you have with us today. Read more about the changes coming to EE.

If your TV box gets warm sometimes, don't worry - this is normal and perfectly safe. This can happen because the TV box has been designed without a cooling fan. If the box is stored correctly, it won't overheat. For added safety, the box has a heat detection chip inside so if it gets too warm, it'll automatically go into standby, and stay in standby, until the temperature is safe.

YouView box from BT

If you have the TV box pictured above and it gets warm sometimes, don't worry - this is normal and perfectly safe. This can happen because the TV box has been designed without a cooling fan. If the box is stored correctly, it won't overheat. For added safety, the box has a heat detection chip inside so if it gets too warm, it'll automatically go into standby, and stay in standby, until the temperature is safe.

To reduce the temperature of the TV box when it's not in use, we recommend using the ‘High Eco Mode’ setting. To do this, press the Home (or YouView) button on your remote, scroll to 'Device Management', scroll down to ‘Eco-Mode' and change the setting to ‘High’.

Storing your box correctly

  • Remove the protective film from the top of the TV box
  • Make sure there's at least 5cm clearance above, and to the sides, of the box
  • Don't put anything on top of it
  • Don't put the box on top of any other electrical items
  • Keep out of direct sunlight
  • Keep away from other electrical devices or sources of heat, such as external power packs
  • Keep away from soft furnishings, such as cushions and rugs
