Security on the BT Hub

Big things are coming at EE

BT and EE are part of the same family, and big things are coming for the EE brand. But this won't change any of the BT services you have with us today. Read more about the changes coming to EE.

Using wi-fi at home is a convenient and secure way to connect to the internet. We use a variety of technologies to keep your home wi-fi safe.

1) Encryption technology

All BT Hubs include a built-in security system that protects your wi-fi network from anyone trying to access it without your wireless key. Check the table to see what type of wireless security your model of Hub uses.

BT Smart Hub WPA2 WPA2
BT Home Hub 5 WPA2 WPA2
BT Home Hub 4 WPA (Auto) WPA2
BT Home Hub 3 WPA Auto -

WPA2 (and its predecessor WPA) are encryption technologies used to keep wireless networks secure and private. They were developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance, which BT is a member of.

When buying a product with wi-fi, look for Wi-Fi Certification, which means it has WPA2 security.

2) Activated firewall

A firewall is a security system that protects your network by checking incoming and outgoing traffic. Traffic deemed safe is let in, and traffic that can damage your computer, such as malware, is blocked.

All BT Hubs have a firewall, which is turned on by default.

3) WPS key for sharing wi-fi

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a method of quickly connecting devices to a router simply by pressing the dedicated WPS button on the hub. It’s built into all BT Hubs. As well as being a more convenient way to connect, it means you don’t have to share your password if you don’t want to.

4) Up-to-date software

We regularly release software upgrades for our Hubs. These upgrades are sent to the Hub automatically over the internet, and add new features and important security fixes.

It’s also important to consider installing anti-virus software and parental controls:
