The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service run by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA). It stops your telephone number being available to organisations, including charity and voluntary organisations, who may telephone you with sales or marketing calls.

How do I register?

If you sign up for BT Privacy at Home we'll register you to the Telephone Preference Service. We also offer Caller Display which allows you to see the number of the person who's calling. Sign up here www.bt.com/myfeatures >

How long does it take to start working?

Once you've registered, it takes about a month to start working.

What if I'm still getting unwanted sales and marketing calls after registering?

There's always a chance that some companies may not abide by the Telephone Preference Service. If you receive direct marketing or sales calls after registration, you can complain directly to the Telephone Preference Service. You can make a complaint at www.tpsonline.org.uk > (opens a new window)

What happens if I want to remove my number from registration?

You must contact the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) direct, as we can't cancel the Telephone Preference Service on your behalf. Find out more > (opens a new window)

I've registered, but I'm still getting texts from businesses?

The text message service is not included in the Telephone Preference Service, but you can stop texts to your landline by calling 0800 587 5252 from the landline you're receiving them on.

Can I register through BT if I'm not a BT customer?
