How to spot and handle a scam

The goal of a scammer is to gain access to your sensitive information, such as passwords and bank details. If you think you may be dealing with a scammer, end the conversation and never share any personal information.

Signs of a scam call

  • The caller sounds urgent or threatening
  • They ask for remote access to your computer
  • They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details

What to do

  • Hang up
  • If they claim to be from BT report the call

  • If they claim to be from a respected business, look the business's number up and call back

  • Then delete the email
  • Even real-looking emails may have been spoofed

Signs of a scam text

  • The text sounds urgent or threatening
  • There are spelling or grammar mistakes
  • They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details

What to do

  • Don't click on links, reply or text back
  • If you can see the number, check whether it's genuine by searching online

  • Then delete the text
